Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye, the two front-runners in the Grand National Party's presidential nomination race, should both be subjected to more intensive screening, as Park has put it. Some worry that they will both go to ruin if they attack each other excessively. A majority of respondents in an opinion poll predicted that if nothing changes, the two will run for the presidency separately. But if they fail to pass the hurdle of intensive screening,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], neither will survive as a presidential candidate.

Many stress that the hopefuls should give priority in their campaigns to such issues as how to revive the economy and how to rebuild national security. Wherever you listen to people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they say how important it is to improve ordinary peoples economic circumstances and the national economy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which the Roh Moo-hyun administration has damaged, and how to rebuild national security and strengthen the Korean-U.S. alliance, which the Left is destroying. None of that, of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is wrong.

But oddly enough, that isnt what people talk about privately. They are much more interested in the two GNP front-runners' past and personal matters. People want to know how rich they are and why, and what their relationships with the opposite sex have been. Lee, in a swipe at the childless Park, has said only people with children can talk about education,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Park has wondered out loud how someone who got out of their compulsory military service can become commander-in-chief? People like to talk about plausible stories,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rumor and gossip included. And it is such stories that could deal a fatal blow to either of the presidential hopefuls if they surface late in the campaign.
Lets face it. People dutifully say they will vote for candidates in consideration of their policies, vision and abilities to govern. But in reality, they tend to make a judgment based on broad ethical criteria. In other words, no matter how excellent the policies and how exemplary their leadership, voters are swayed by the candidates' past life and the way they rate them morally. Before that, we saw a GNP presidential candidate defeated when an ex-official claimed during the election campaign that two of the candidates sons had dodged the draft. We saw the GNP lose because it emerged that the party had received literally a truckload of cash in illegal campaign funds. The ruling camp, though in disarray, is hoping for another scandal to surface at the 11th hour and save it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just as in the last two presidential elections.

That is why the two GNP contenders should clean house now. Any dirt that comes to light later will be a weapon for the ruling party. If they sweep any of it under the carpet for fear of backbiting, slander,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or whatever they want to call it, they might end up losing the presidential election. Their exchange of offensives and counteroffensives in the run-up to the primaries can benefit them and their party. First, as we saw in the ruling party's nomination race before the last presidential election,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such an exchange can galvanize the race and attract public attention to it, like a sort of festival. Second, if everything comes out now, GNP contenders have enough time to develop arguments in their defense. It would give them a chance to explain. And when any accusations turn out to be groundless, they will backfire on the muckrakers and settle the matter that way. That means those with a clean record dont necessarily have the advantage.
Here is a more important point. If a contender wins the GNP nomination and runs for president while their shady private life and weak points are still under wraps,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they would then cost their party the election if anything surfaces later. The candidate would thus end up killing both the rival they beat in the primaries and themselves, like a patient dying despite an organ transplant.
Of course, vetting is a different thing from malicious attacks. Slander or libel under cover of screening should be judged strictly by the party members in the process. But if the party is negligent in the screening process for fear of criticism or the party's disintegration, the GNP could be in for a much more serious result. If the screening process gets ugly, it may look unseemly to the public. But if it doesnt vet the candidates properly for fear of such criticism and then falls victim to malicious stories from ruling-party supporters, the party would end up committing the much graver sin of letting down the many who ache for a change of regime.
Former president Kim Young-sam has said recently,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "We shouldnt conduct election campaigns quietly. The noisier the election campaigns are,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the more attention people pay to them. We can afford to be much noisier during the election campaigns." He agrees that a noisy vetting process is an unavoidable stage in the process. One of the virtues contenders can show in the screening process is to train themselves to deal with attacks from rivals. How can a man or woman who is unable to handle them be president of the country?相关的主题文章:

The film adaptation of the Broadway hit Sweeney Todd was named best musical or comedy and star Johnny Depp was named best actor in that genre for his role as a vengeful barber who kills his customers.
