Sometimes, good fortune just falls in your lap. Such was the case for Mike Roper. The 18yearold Pictou Landing resident, who manned the pipes for three seasons with the NNEC Gryphons, was a goaltending instructor for Dave McIntyre's hockey school last August. That was when Brad Holt, coach of the hockey team at University of New England (UNE) in Biddeford,[url=http://www.sport.fr/smartphones/moncler.asp]moncler homme[/url], Me., called McIntyre, whom he had known from McIntyre's playing days at the University of New Hampshire. Holt had just gotten the coaching job that month at UNE, had no time time for recruiting and was desperate for a goaltender for the fledgling Division 3 program, located just south of Portland. "I called Dave and said 'Dave, I've got a problem. I need a goaltender right now'," Holt recalled. "He recommended Mike, and I couldn't have gotten a better recommendation, or a better kid." Not long after that, Roper's family visited the school, returned home and packed his bags, sending him off to Maine. "It's quite an opportunity," Roper said this week, as he was visiting family for the Christmas holidays. "It goes to show that players can come out of the high school program and excel at higher levels of play." The UNE Nor'easters are going through some growing pains and are winless thus far, so Roper, the only Canadian (and only goalie) on the team right now, is seeing more than his fair share of pucks. '"He's getting 60 shots a game," Holt said. "Mike's technically sound, which is good because he's getting two, three, four shots in one sequence. I told Mike, though, to hang in there and I will build a team around him. "He's a big man on campus now, people cannot believe how good he is. Fans are screaming his name the entire time." Roper had expected to take business courses at the Nova Scotia Community College this year, but those plans obviously changed in hurry; he's taking business at UNE, and has gotten some financial help via academic scholarships. |
